New year, new skill

In association with Advertiser Classifieds

The New Year has arrived and many of us have set goals and targets for 2019 which may include getting fit, going on a diet, or taking up a new pastime.

Perhaps you have decided that 2019 is the year you want a new challenge and look for a new career but how do you go about obtaining that new dream job - upskilling. They say you never stop learning as you grow and there is a number of courses out there that one can avail of to upgrade the CV and enhance job prospects. Even the plain old satisfaction of acquiring new knowledge can be enough to tempt people to participate in a class while meeting new people and friends.

Here at the advertiser.ie we decided to provide you with a few ideas of what could be of interest.

Coding

If you love tech and decided to study software development or ICT then you will already know of the ample employment opportunities that are available. However if you only saw the computer as a convenient way to shop or connect with people online then get yourself enrolled on a computer course. We are in the middle of another tech boom and there are not enough coders to deal with the demand. Get ahead of the curve and start coding before it is common as typing.

Google Analytics

There is no escaping social media - it is just everywhere. One aspect of the medium that many businesses are still trying to get their heads around is what content is working well and which is going down like a lead balloon. Being able to analyse and interpret social media statistics can help you grow your business and keep track of your KPIs. If you want a job in social media then being a whizz on Google Analytics is a must.

Writing

Every book, every newspaper, and everything single word that you have ever read was written by a human. Newspapers and books maybe eventually replaced by online sites and tablets but it will still be people writing the articles. Compelling content is key to engaging readers and driving traffic, and it starts with clear, concise, copywriting.

Learning a new language

Bonjour. Dos cervezas por favor. Danke schön. Trying out a new tongue can be a fun and fulfilling experience. As the world becomes smaller thanks to the internet, many employees tend to be getting ahead of the chasing pack because they are fluent in two or more languages. If that does not convince you, think about how easy it will be to order food and drink abroad if you have that language dictionary stored in your brain. You never know your teacher might even organise a little class trip away on the Continent.

If foreign languages are not your thing, remember we have the beautiful, poetic, Gaeilge here and there are many classes from which to choose. Síleann na cailíní go bhfuil mé deas dóighiúil, agus aontaím leo. You know what that means? Get yourself to a Conradh na Gaeilge class and find out.

So there you have it. Get out there, learn something new and secure that job satisfying career.
