A Brass Eye night at the Pálás

Director Michael Cumming to take part in Q&A on cult TV satirical series

BRASS EYE was a British comedy series which parodied current affairs shows. It ran for seven episodes on Channel 4 from 1997 to 2001, and featured such writers as Arthur Mathews, Graham Linehan, Charlie Brooker, and David Quantick.

The show has become something of a cult classic, and received a new lease of life in 2017 after the show's director, Michael Cumming, released Oxide Ghosts, a 60-minute film of unbroadcast material from the making of the series.

Galway fans can look forward to the Brass Eye Night when the Pálás Cinema, in association with the Róisín Dubh's Strange Brew, screens an episode of the original Brass Eye series and Oxide Ghosts, as well as host a Q&A with Michael Cumming. The event takes place in the Pálás Cinema on Friday January 11 at 10.30pm.

Part documentary, part artwork, Oxide Ghosts is drawn from hundreds of hours of unseen material from Cumming’s personal archive, and is designed solely for live screenings. It features almost entirely of never before seen footage and provides a rare glimpse into the working practices of Chris Morris, the creator of the series. Chortle.co.uk said the film "offers a well-judged and very rare insight into Brass Eye’s making, encapsulating the fun and covert excitement that went on while the project was still under wraps, before all the legal wrangling kicked in".

Michael Cumming is a director and filmmaker. A graduate of the Royal College of Art Film School. His CV includes Jo Brand’s improvised comedy drama Going Forward, cult classic Snuff Box, The Mark Thomas Product, and Matt Berry’s BAFTA winning sitcom, Toast Of London.
