Higgins campaign gathers pace as Mayor urges Galway to support president

Galway Campaign To Re-elect President Michael D Higgins to hold public meeting tomorrow

Ahead of a public meeting on the campaign to re-elect Michael D Higgins as Uachtarán na hÉireann, the Mayor of Galway, Labour city councillor Niall McNelis, is urging Galwegians to support the campaign and to vote for Uachtarán Higgins on October 26.

Although Uachtarán Higgins is contesting the election as an Independent, his former colleagues in Labour are active in the cross-party coalition supporting his campaign, and in Labour's own campaign in support of the man who served as Mayor of Galway, councillor, senator, and Galway West TD before his election as president in 2011.

"Our campaign slogan in 2011 was 'a president who will do us proud'," said Mayor McNelis. "In office, President Higgins has been an inspiring representative of the country, domestically and internationally. We know that, if re-elected, he will continue to be a compassionate and thoughtful voice for our State and our nation. We are proud to support him, and to call on members of the public across Galway to turn out on Friday October 26, and once again give him their No 1 vote."

The Galway Campaign To Re-elect President Michael D Higgins was launched at Eyre Square last week, and is a cross-party body. It will hold a public meeting in The Harbour Hotel, Dock Street, tomorrow at 7.30pm. It will be addressed by representatives of various parties, trade unionists, and artists. It will be chaired by Donncha O’Connell, professor of law at NUIG.

The Galway Campaign To Re-elect President Michael D Higgins is also asking those who wish to be involved in the campaign to contact the national campaign team via michaeldhiggins.ie or by contacting the Galway office via [email protected] or calling 083 - 3419489.

The Greens have also endorsed Michael D Higgins' campaign, with the party's Galway West candidate, Pauline O'Reilly, pledging she will be "campaigning on the ground in Galway" for his re-election. "It was only appropriate for us to give candidates time to seek nominations to run in the election," she said, "but our support is clearly for a president that we believe will take the role as spokesperson for the country seriously."
