Galway Jazz Festival - the weekend begins right now

Jazz concerts, late night gigs, workshops, and films today, tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday.

THE 2018 Galway Jazz Festival begins this evening [Thursday October 4] at 8pm with a performance by the radio.string.quartet at St Nicholas' Collegiate Church, kicking off a weekend of 60 events, in 20 venues, and featuring some 150 musicians.

Before that show there will be an official opening at The Kitchen café in the Galway City Museum at 6pm, with the Mayor of Galway, Labour city councillor, Niall McNelis, the guest speaker. This event is free and all are welcome to attend. After that there will be formal concerts, late night gigs, workshops, two film screenings, a panel discussion, and the 'Snagsiopa' events on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Among the highlights will be Susannah De Wrixon's shows at Coffeewerk and Press (2pm, Saturday and Sunday, admission free; and University Hospital Galway, Sunday, 3.30pm, free ). However Jim Doherty and Dave Fleming will not be able to accompany her, but Conor Linehan has stepped into the breach. Linehan is a virtuoso pianist and composer, who will be well known to Galway audiences for writing the music to DruidShakespeare; Woyzeck In Winter at the 2017 Galway International Arts Festival; and more recently, Druid's production of Richard III. Linehan will also play a solo show at The Universal (Sunday, 6.30pm, free ).
