“SOME PEOPLE have told me I’m grumpy; it’s not something I’m aware of. It’s not like I walk around poking children in the eye...not very small ones anyway." So says Dylan Moran, about himself.
Others will say, quite rightly, that Moran is one of the best comedians to have ever emerged from Ireland, or anywhere else for that matter. Having just completed a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe, he brings his critically acclaimed show, Dr Cosmos, exclusively to the Vodafone Comedy Carnival Galway - his only Irish performances of 2018.
Dr Cosmos explores Moran's views on love, politics, misery, and life's everyday absurdities, all served with the Meath man's trademark poetical panache. “Home gigs can be hard because it’s an odd collision,” he once mused. “More than anything, I feel self-conscious when my family are in the audience. I’m doing this job which is not quite acting – part of it is me, part performance. You’re presenting a cartoon of yourself to people who know you as a line-drawing.”
Moran was just 24 when he became the youngest-ever winner of the Perrier Award in 1996. His deadpan approach, combined with a witty and crackpot lyricism, won him many fans through such successful tours as Gurgling for Money, Monster, and Yeah, Yeah. He also co-wrote and starred in the BAFTA winning sitcom Black Books. Other notable screen roles include Notting Hill, Calvary, Shaun of the Dead, and Run Fatboy Run. His last tour, Off The Hook, took in 149 dates across the globe.
