People of the Tribes: Meet Morgan.

In association with McGettigans

Hi, I'm Morgan O Callaghan. I am a born and bred Galwegian, a happy one at that. I'm a transport enthusiast and I've been interested in the Bus and coach industry for as long as I can remember. Ever since I was a young boy I can always remember being fascinated by the bus and coach industry. My obsession as some people would call it, lead to me knowing every driver working for a bus company in Galway. It's only in the last few years I've realised where my passion and love for this industry was taking me. I always wanted to be physically involved in the ''ins and the outs'' of this industry which didn't go down well with ex-girlfriends, who thought I was a freak!

I've actually been hands-on in the industry as a worker for the last year and I have to say for an industry that is so mentally and emotionally draining, I wouldn't change my interest for the world! My introduction to the world of work involving buses and coaches started when I was working for Reaneys of Galway last summer as a cleaner. I don't think if it wasn't for them giving me a chance, I wouldn't be in the position I am in today.

I then moved to Buslink in Athenry in March of this year which for a city boy like me was a change and a change that wasn't going to stop me. The experience I received over my roughly 5-month stay, I will never be able to repay.

I have to realise where my life is going, I'm in leaving cert this year which means that next year I will be out in the world of work. I could say I was ambitious but with the contacts, I have built over the last couple of years. I hope that in 10 years time I will have my own company! I'm not going to lie it's quite possible. There are no people of my age interested in this industry anymore, all our company owners in Ireland will at one stage retire, Sell up, close etc because the likes of me won't be there to take over the companies. It's not all plain sailing either, with a depleted workforce of drivers, companies will struggle to get drivers in the future, we have the imminent destabilisation of the public transport sector with the introduction of Go Ahead into the Irish Market. These are all changes we will have to adapt to but I'm excited to see where the future takes me. I may see you on one of my couches in the near future!
