WHO SAYS festival season is over in Galway? The Comedy Carnival is on the way, as is the Oyster Festival, and visual arts fest TULCA, while this week saw the line-up for the 2018 Galway Jazz Festival announced.
The Galway Jazz Festival runs from Thursday October 4 to Sunday 7, and features musicians from 14 countries, playing more than 50 events, across 20 different venues in the city. The opening concert by the much lauded Viennese Radio.String.Quartet in St Nicholas' Collegiate Church in association with Music for Galway.
The 'Brexit Schmexit' strand will focus on British jazz musicians, with concerts by vocalist/pianist Liane Carroll, rising piano star Ashley Henry, composer-performer Poppy Ackroyd, jazz-punk outfit World Service Project, ECM recording artist Huw Warren, and a DJ double act with snooker legend Steve Davis and Kavus Torabi.
There will also be a focus on Germany, with shows from "the poet of German jazz", Julia Hulsmann and her trio; jazz harpist Kathrin Pechlof; and saxophonist Anna-Lena Schnabel, making her Irish debut.
As well as evening concerts, the GJF will host lunchtime gigs, 'pocket-sized' performances, a film screening, a jazz shop, and a panel discussion about the possible impact of Brexit on live music and the arts generally. There will also be artists from Austria, Holland, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Poland, Spain and the US.
