My name's John Martin Tierney and I come from Moycullen, so I'm a Galway native. Where I live is so close to the city that I can consider myself being from the shticks and the city at the same time.
I'm a musician by trade, I front and write for JANAJ (pronounced yah-najh ), and play guitar with Dead Horse Jive. I also run a small studio, work as a sound engineer, am involved with the Galway Busker Community, and volunteer as part of the Galway International Arts Festival. Very recently I've gotten into gig photography and have shot gigs for Bitch Falcon, the Oceltots, and Hudson Taylor to name a few.
I'd like to think I'm avidly involved in the music scene in Galway. If I'm not playing a gig, I'll be attending one, I try to get to a show every week. There's such a wealth of talent that's homegrown that plays every night of the week, and so many talented artists travel to play here because of the reputation we have. The Roisin Dubh Open Mic followed by John Conneely Inc is the highlight every Sunday.
I'm had a great time being part of the Arts Festival again, I was mostly part of the Big Top this year. I'd recommend volunteering to anyone, I've met some amazing people, including some of my closest friends while volunteering at the Arts Festival. Carly and the gang are so welcoming and sound.
I'm just coming off a nationwide tour with Dead Horse Jive that took us the length and breadth of the country in the back of an old Nissan. JANAJ had a sold-out headline show on the 29th of June, and a new single coming in the summer. Hopefully, we'll get to play a few festivals over the summer, so watch this space.
