Galway camogie prepare for tougher test in semi-final

Galway will take on Kilkenny in the last four of the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship after a facile 0-20 to 0-4 win over Dublin at the weekend.

Cork will take on the winners of the first quarter-final Tipperary in a repeat of the Munster final which was won by the Leesiders, and both games will take place in Semple Stadium on August 18.

Galway were simply too strong for Dublin, who enjoyed plenty of early possession, but came unstuck when faced with Galway's full-back line, spearheaded by captain Sarah Dervan at full-back.

Aoife Donohue and Catriona Cormican slotted a brace of good points each, while Carrie Dolan slotted three frees, and by the break Galway led 0-7 to 0-2 at the interval.

Galway's defence succeeded in holding Dublin to just two points in the second half, and at the other end the relied on their accuracy for points. Niamh Kilkenny, who was massively influential, Donohue, Cormican and Niamh McGrath all kept the scoreboard ticking over.

Manager Cathal Murray introduced Cliodhna Walsh, Finola Keely and Siobhán McGrath, all finding the target to ease Galway into a comfortable win.

Team captain Sarah Dervan, who was named Player of the Match, was supported by Tara Kenny, Lorraine Ryan and Heather Cooney.

“It was a great team performance, ” Dervan says. “We always gave the ball to the person in the best position. There was nothing in it in the first 20 or 25 minutes. It was a real dogfight, but look, we know what’s ahead of us now and we just have to knuckle down for the next two weeks.

“Some of the scores were fantastic by the forwards. They do the hard work up there trying to put it over the bar. Twenty scores is great – we’ll have to be concerned about not getting a goal, but that’s something to work on over the next two weeks.”

Galway U16A will face Dublin in the All Ireland semi finals on Sunday.
