MORE THAN 60 of Ireland’s finest young wind, brass, and percussion players have been selected to play in this year’s Irish Youth Wind Ensemble - a week long music course culminating in a series of concerts, one of which will be in Galway.
The Irish Youth Wind Ensemble will play St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church this Sunday at 6.30pm. They will be led by the conductor Ronan O’Reilly, director of music of the Artane School of Music, and guest conductor Capt Thomas Kelly. The concert’s repertoire will feature Leonard Berstein’s suite from Candide, alongside compositions by Elgar, Philip Sparke, and Martin Ellerby.
The Wind Ensemble was formed in 1985 by James Cavanagh and Fred O’Callaghan, and since then more than a thousand young musicians have participated in the event. It provides an opportunity for young wind, brass, and percussion players to study, perform, and experience music specifically composed for the wind ensemble medium, and to present music which otherwise would not be heard by Irish audiences.Tickets will be available on the door for €15/10 concession ).
