Glennon’s squad ready for action

Following their recent success in the Connacht championship over Mayo, the Galway senior ladies footballers kick off their championship season against Wexford in Birr on Saturday (4.45pm ).

Stephen Glennon's squad is in group three of the championship with Wexford and Westmeath, and expectations are high Galway will top that group.

On Saturday week (July 28 ) they play Westmeath, who defeated Wexford last weekend by 2-12 to 2-11 in the first round of the group.

Two teams from group three (there are four groups ) qualify for the All-Ireland quarter-finals, and they are fixed for either Monday August 6 or Saturday August 12 depending on whether a team comes first or second.

If Galway were to top their group, then they would most likely face either All-Ireland champions Dublin or Mayo in the quarter-finals, depending on which team comes second in group four. Cavan are the other team in group four and they were beaten by Mayo last weekend.

Saturday's game is part of a double header, and for those heading to Birr early, they could take in some Cork and Monaghan that throws in at 3pm.
