GENDER - Is it something you are born with, or is it a social construct, a set of behaviour and attitudes, imposed on, and expected from individuals simply because of the genitalia they were born with?
This very contemporary debate will be explored in Good Dog Theatre's new show, Men At Play, written by Kinvara resident Brian Burns, which runs at the Galway Fringe Festival on Monday July 23, Tuesday 25, and Wednesday 25 at 8pm in the Columban Hall, Sea Road.
“Congratulations, it’s a fine healthy boy” an off-stage voice declares, compelling and coercing Fergus and Fionn - a gay man with an alter ego and a straight man with issues - into performing the male identities assigned to them, but which do not always reflect who they are. And who are they? Two men struggling with identity, two actors struggling to put on a play, or something in between? Via song, movement, dance, and depictions of real-life dramas, both hilarious and harrowing, Men At Play explores the performativity of male identity, through performance.
Tickets are €14/12 from www.galwayfringe.ie and at the door.
