CRUINNIÚ NA nÓg, the national day of creativity for children and young people, takes place in Galway city this weekend, and featuring a range of exhibitions, workshops, music gigs, and artistic opportunities.
Cruinniú na nÓg, which takes place in the Nuns Island Theatre, encourages children and young people to unlock their imaginations and try something new and creative.
Puppet maker Dave Donovan will host a Bunraku puppetry workshop (10am to 1pm ). Bunraku is a form of traditional Japanese puppet theatre, founded at the start of the 17th century. Galway Youth Theatre will lead once-off taster workshop in acting and improvisation (1.30pm to 3pm ). The class is suitable for ages 13+.
From 4pm to 6pm there will be screenings of short films curated by Limerick’s Fresh Film Festival. Fresh is dedicated to encouraging young filmmakers aged between seven and 18, and includes films from Australia, Canada, Ireland, Poland, and the USA.
From 7pm to 9pm there will be music with 14-year-old Sorcha, playing originals and covers; singer-songwriter Sonny, who cites Damien Rice, Glen Hansard, and Ed Sheeran, as inspirations; and guitarist Aengus Hackett, whose playing embraces post-rock, math-rock, jazz, folk, and indie.
Admission to all events are free. Booking, via Eventbrite, is required for workshops. Cruinniú na nÓg is led by Creative Ireland and facilitated by Youth Work Ireland Galway and Galway City Council.
