Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

What is the OCT scan?

Ocular Coherence Tomography is an advanced diagnostic 3 dimensional eye scan for people of all ages. The technology uses light instead of sound waves to provide a high resolution 3D image of all the major structures in the eye.

This advanced equipment assists the optometrist in the early detection of eye abnormalities. Such conditions include age-related macular degeneration (ARMD ), diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma and retinal detachments. We can even closely observe the blood vessels at the back of the eye. Clinical signs such as a haemorrhage or an occlusion of a blood vessel may indicate cardiovascular issues such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

The great thing is that taking the scan is painless, non-invasive, simple and quick. It is quite similar to getting your photograph taken. The major benefit is undeniable. We can literally look beneath the surface of the regular retinal image. Never before, has it been easier to find out the exact state and precise location of a particular eye condition.

In addition, we can then study and review each image captured on a screen. Reviewing and comparing these successive images allows the eye care professional to identify even small changes that can occur over time. The OCT scan is ultra precise allowing us to pinpoint abnormalities in micrometers and particular areas of concern by digitally uncovering the layers of the eye.
