Last minute winner dumps Galway WFC out of Shield

Galway Women's FC travelled to the capital on Saturday to take on Shelbourne in the WNL Shield, and despite leading twice, they came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline after extra-time.

In a pulsating game, it was Galway who started the brighter with Lynsey McKey finishing expertly when she found herself one-on-one with the Shels' keeper.

The momentum switched in favour of the home side when Niamh Prior finished after a goalkeeping error. Shels dominated the remainder of the half and Galway were happy to see another Prior strike blast off the post and away from danger.

The soaring temperatures clearly took its toll on both sides in the second half and neither could find a breakthrough. Shels again had the better chances, hitting the woodwork twice. In the second half of extra time it looked liked Chloe Singleton’s wonder strike, a half volley from distance, was going to be the winner for the Galway women, but Shels fought back with time running out.

Noelle Murray jinked away from two Galway players and hit a powerful shot to level it. Just when the game looked destined for penalties, Kate Mooney’s back post header ensured it was Shels who progressed.
