Bacik to launch Labour Yes campaign in Galway

Senator Ivana Bacik will launch the Galway West Labour Party Yes Campaign to repeal the Eighth, this Friday, at 12noon in the Kasbah Wine Bar on Quay Street. A canvass will take place afterwards on Shop Street.

Senator Bacik is the Reid Professor of criminal law, criminology, and penology at Trinity College Dublin. She is a qualified barrister and a senior lecturer and fellow of Trinity College Dublin. First elected to the Seanad in 2007, she was re-elected in 2011 and 2016.

Labour Party director of elections, and Galway city councillor, Niall McNelis is encouraging the public to vote Yes on May 25. “The referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment is extremely important. A Yes vote will ensure women get the proper healthcare they need at a vulnerable time in their lives. A No vote will continue to force women to travel abroad or use medication ordered online.”

1981 Hunger Strike vigil in Galway

This Saturday, May 5, marks the 37th anniversary of the death of Bobby Sands after 66 days on hunger strike in the H-Blocks, and a commemoration will be held in Galway.

Bobby Sands was an elected MP, and his death was the first of 10 hunger-strike deaths in the H-Blocks in 1981. To mark this, Galway Sinn Féin will hold a vigil at the Liam Mellows statue in Eyre Square at 2pm this Saturday.

The event will also commemorate all those who “died on hunger-strike in the cause of Irish freedom”, including Galwayman Tony Darcy in 1940.
