Jim McKee and the Head Of The Sea

Tyrone man's view of the landscape, people, and culture of south Galway

KINVARA, AND the south Galway/north Clare region, has inspired both the title and works of a new exhibition by the Tyrone born, locally based, artist Jim McKee.

Head Of The Sea features 16 new works by McKee exploreing the music, sporting, and coastal lifestyle and characters of Kinvara. It opens in SIAR, Main Street, Kinvara, this evening at 7pm as part of the Cuckoo Fleadh. The guest speaker will be Dr Karen Weekes. Jim will also perform a new self-penned song, 'Head Of The Sea', at the opening.

“Kinvara means ‘head of’ or ‘mouth of’ the sea,” says McKee. "Having lived there for many years I wanted to express some of the many sights, the people, and the places I find so fascinating. I also wanted to capture the fantastic year it has been for sport in the area, and have included some portraits of hurling legends old and new."

Jim was also commissioned to paint this year’s official poster for the Cuckoo Fleadh and the annual Cruinnui na mBad poster, both of which will be on show in the exhibition which runs throughout May.
