Delays, which will result in the planning application for the €100 million N6 Galway city ring road project not being submitted until May at the earliest - months later than had been indicated - have been branded as “completely unacceptable”.
This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív, who he has called on both the Government and Transport Infrastructure Ireland to submit plans for the road to An Bord Pleanála without delay. Dep Ó Cuív said he understands the Galway County Council has requested a meeting with An Bord Pleanála but “no date has been agreed”.
The views of the National Parks and Wildlife Service on the proposed development were received by the Galway County Council in January. The report relates to biodiversity and environmental impact assessments undertaken for the project. It is also understood that the “appropriate amendments” to the environmental documents have now been completed and that the changes are being incorporated into the final version of the documentation.
Dep Ó Cuív said this work must be completed before the project can be submitted to the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, for approval. “I am anxious this process be expedited as quickly as possible,” he said.
The Cornamona based TD is now calling on “all parties involved in this process” to ensure this project is “progressed as quickly as possible once it is submitted to An Bord Pleanála”. He said the ring road is “one of the most urgently needed infrastructure projects” for the city, which has already “been delayed for a number of years”. He said: “Until it is completed, the traffic chaos in the city will continue.”
