Clare Island is to welcome an influx of adventurous mainlanders to its shores tomorrow (Saturday May 2) for the third annual Clare Island Adventure Race, which starts at 1pm.

A win in the Conquest Connemara adventure race was the only result that would guarantee Mayo’s Padraig Marrey the overall adventure racing league winner’s title. With 10 rounds held all over the country and the who’s who of adventure racing the start line such as Peter O’Farrell, Noel Kavanagh and Adrian Hennessy on the start line, and added to the mix World Champion mountain biker Niall Davies and Irish international mountain runner James McFadden, Marrey’s chances looked very tough.

Kilkenny woman Roisin Hickey claimed second place and a much deserved podium finish at the weekend when she took part in one of the toughest adventure races on the calendar; the Dingle Adventure Race.

In association with the Westport Get Out There Adventure Festival, the Westport Festival of Sport fun day, with the theme of sport for all, takes place on the Mall, Westport, from August 19 to 22. The event, now in its second year, is coordinated by the Mayo Sports Partnership and promises to be a day full of fun and activity.

A unique, free festival takes place throughout Westport next week as everyone is encouraged to ‘Get Out There’ and try a different sport or activity in a series of adventure points which will be scattered throughout the town from August 19 to 22.

Gaelforce Events, the organisers of the extremely popular Gaelforce West adventure race, are running a cycle challenge outside of Newport on June 19 and 20. The event includes a 24 hour and eight hour challenge open to soloists and teams of up to 10.
