Following an unprecedented level of nominations for The Carers Association’s Carers of the Year Awards 2014, Breege Mulvaney from Charlestown has been announced as Mayo’s Carer of the Year 2014. She was presented with her award at a special presentation on Wednesday afternoon in the Park Hotel, Kiltimagh.

The focus of the evenings will be on stressing to carers the importance of looking after their own health. The series, entitled - Caring for Yourself: The Importance of Self-Care To Your Caring Role, will provide carers with information regarding their physical and mental health, guidance on looking after yourself while dealing with dementia, nutrition tips, keeping yourself informed on carers’ rights, entitlements, and changes to social policy that may affect carers.

With the closing date for nominations fast approaching on April 20, The Carers Association is sending a final call to people across Westmeath to nominate their chosen family carers for the Carers of the Year Awards 2012.

Family carers are “under siege” according to The Carers Association with government’s current review of policies, including the Domiciliary Care Allowance.
