Mayo’s lotto luck in 2014 has been well reported by now.
A €2.5 millio jackpot win in Claremorris over the weekend added to the massive Euromillions win of €15 million in Castlebar in April.
And when it comes to sharing out the spoils of National Lottery spending, Mayo has fared well too.
It was announced this week that eight local clubs and charities will benefit from €79,350 under the Department of Health’s 2014 allocation of National Lottery funds.
The Dolmen Clubhouse, a drop-in centre for people with mental health issues, has been awarded €25,750 under the fund to refurbish a property in Castlebar, while the Carers Association received €15,000 to fund respite breaks for family carers in Mayo.
In Belmullet, the national disability and employment charity, IASE, received €15,000 to implement their new five-year strategy and, in Claremorris, Mayo Recovery Partners Ltd, has been awarded €4,900 to fund a music programme.
The other benefitting groups are the Irish Wheelchair Association, Castlebar (€10,000 ); Arthritis Ireland’s Ballina branch (€2,000 ); Mayo Travellers Support Group (€1,000 ); and Rehab Care Castlebar (€5,700 ).
Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, warmly welcomed the funding injection for the “eight very worthy projects”.
“The successful groups will be putting these much needed funds to very good use,” he said. “It will benefit a large section of people in the county and I wish the groups well in their work.”
