Five Mayo based companies exported goods to the value of €709 million in the past year landing them a place on the Top 250 Exporters in Ireland and Northern Ireland list.

A Castlebar architecture firm has won a prestigious national award for its design of a university building in Galway which was also named as the Most Environmentally Sustainable Project 2012.

An estimated 10,000 people descended on Castlebar for day three of the inaugural Heart of Castlebar - Féile Sráide ‘Croí Chaisleán an Bharraigh’ last Saturday. The three-day event provided a massive economic boost to the county town where shoppers were told by Taoiseach Enda Kenny to support their local businesses.

Baxter Healthcare will temporarily lay off 150 full-time workers from its Castlebar plant for a four month period, it emerged this week. The US pharmaceutical company, which is the major employer in the county town and employes more than 1,000 people in its plants in Castlebar and Swinford, let 200 workers go at the end of last year due to the downturn in the economy.

The Irish Farmers’ Association in Mayo are expressing their relief this week at the breakdown of the World Trade Organisation talks, but the lack of a deal could have serious implications for Mayo’s largest employers who export €3bn worth of products every year and employ 3,000 people.
