This is yacht sailing Lough Ree-style, at a price that won’t hurt the pocket.
Lough Ree Yacht Club is running this year’s Adult Sailing Course on six evenings - on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday June 27, 28, and 29, and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday July 4, 5 and 6, every evening from 6.30 to 9pm.
Each student sailor will get the hands-on opportunity to learn what to wear afloat and why; ropework - get up and running with some basic knots; weather – what’s good to get out in and ultimately what to avoid; how to depart from the harbour; how to set the sails and trim them according to wind conditions; steering – getting to grips with the tiller; wind direction – how to determine where the wind is coming from; upwind, downwind, and sailing at 90° to the wind. At the end of each evening you will learn how to take down the sails and return to harbour under the tuition of the club’s excellent teachers, all of whom have many years’ experience.
“Sailing is a wonderful sport,” says Frank Murray, commodore of Lough Ree Yacht Club. “It gives you a great sense of freedom and relaxation, while also being extremely challenging, pitting your wits against the elements of wind, waves, and your competitors.
“It is a great team sport and we always have great fun on the adult sailing course.”
All courses at Lough Ree Yacht Club are run with a love of sailing in mind - to encourage a fun, safe, enjoyable experience on the water that will leave you feeling invigorated.
The course begins on Monday evening June 27 and all beginners are welcome. The course runs for six nights in total, over the course of two weeks, and costs €140.
If you are interested in joining with a few work colleagues or getting out in the fresh air, developing a new hobby in 2011, and meeting many new friends, why not try sailing on Lough Ree! When you have finished the course, you will have many opportunities to continue sailing as crew on the cruiser races from July to September and during the annual regatta from July 30 - August 5.
