Heart health seminar

Confused about ‘good fats’ and ‘bad fats’? Not sure whether to have a boiled egg or not? Are low fat spreads really better than butter?

Nutritional consultants Cathriona Hodgins and Lynda McFarland are back hosting the next topic in their series of nutritional seminars; the last one ‘Food for the Brain’ was a great success in both Athlone and Nenagh and is now being followed by another important topic - Heart Health: how to reduce your cholesterol and blood pressure through diet and lifestyle. This seminar will take the same format as last time with an informative nutritional talk by Cathriona followed by a quick and tasty meal ideas cookery demo with Lynda on Wednesday October 27 in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone.

Dr Kate McGarry, consultant physician and chair of the Irish Heart Foundation’s Council on Women and CVD, declared recently: “Every two hours a woman dies in Ireland from cardiovascular disease (heart, stroke, and blood vessel diseases ). When it comes to health issues, women are more concerned about breast cancer even though seven times as many women die from heart disease and stroke in Ireland each year. Our goal is to alert women that especially after the menopause, they are at risk of heart attack and stroke, as much as any man.”

These are startling facts about CVD in Ireland and especially among women, but the good news is that a positive lifestyle and healthy eating can alter risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

The ‘Heart Health’ workshop will focus on untangling the conflicting information surrounding the good and the bad fats; how ‘real foods’ as opposed to the processed variety can lower your cholesterol effectively and how avoidance of certain ‘anti-nutrient’ foods and lifestyle changes can help reduce your blood pressure.

The Heart Health seminar takes place in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone on Wednesday October 27 at 8pm. The cost is €15, which includes free tastings of delicious snacks and meal ideas.

For further details, bookings, or one-to-one appointments, phone Cathriona Hodgins at (087 ) 6355643 or Lynda McFarland at (087 ) 7927471.
