Low snow impacting your ski holiday? Your rights explained

As Europe faces another warm winter, millions of travellers who embrace the slopes annually, are confronting a stark reality: significant snow shortages across favourite ski resorts in Europe and North America.

This development is particularly disheartening for those planning ski holidays for half term and up until the season’s end around April, particularly when costs can end up amounting to thousands of euros per person.

World Nomads, a global adventure travel insurance provider, is stepping forward with crucial advice and insights for European travellers whose ski holiday plans are being upended by the lack of snow.

Jonathan Frankham, World Nomads General Manager UK & Europe, said this season’s warm weather has not only reshaped the traditional skiing holiday landscape, leading to a significant disruption of many European’s winter plans, but it has also highlighted the growing impact of climate change on our beloved winter sports destinations.

“With 2023 marking the warmest year on record, it’s become evident that the climate crisis is no longer a distant threat but a present reality affecting our travel choices.

“It’s crucial for travellers to understand that most travel insurance policies, including those offered by World Nomads, typically do not cover cancellations due to a lack of snow, as these fall under a ‘lack of enjoyment’ scenario. Similar to not providing a refund for rain during a beach holiday, the principle applies to ski holidays impacted by insufficient snow.

“Insurance, however, is crucial for skiers, particularly given the heightened risk of accidents associated with low snow conditions. Sparse snow can expose rocks and other hazards, significantly increasing the likelihood of mishaps on the slopes. Therefore, even if the slopes remain open, it is essential to be well-informed about current snow conditions and to exercise caution when reaching for the skis.

“In any case, we recognise the disappointment and frustration many travellers are currently facing due to unforeseen changes in their travel plans. During these times, we advise travellers to reach out to their holiday providers to inquire about possible modifications to their itinerary. We also advocate exploring alternative adventures offered by mountains and ski resorts – from scenic hikes to gourmet dining, there’s a wealth of experiences waiting to be discovered.

“As travel plans evolve, we would remind Europeans that assessing insurance coverage is critical. Whether opting for hiking over skiing or engaging in other winter activities, ensuring your insurance offers cover your new itinerary and activities is a necessary yet effective way to safeguard holiday plans against the unpredictable. At World Nomads, each activity listed has a level of cover. When you buy a policy and tell us the activities you’ll do, you will be covered for participating in all activities at that level and all activities in the levels below. For example, most types of skiing falls under level 3, which would also offer cover for activities such as mountain biking and hiking,” Mr Frankham said.
