Santa Claus will be extra busy this festive season as research reveals that 44 per cent of Irish dogs and cats get presents from the man himself on Christmas morning.
In a survey conducted by Petmania in recent months, respondents were asked how they celebrate Christmas with their pets, with 90 percent of people marking Christmas in some way for their furry friends.
Most pet owners revealed that their pets have their very own Christmas stocking, while close to 10 percent admitted to buying matching family pyjamas every year – including a pair for their much loved pet. Over half stated their dog or cat gets a special treat on the day.
The festive season is an exciting time, but there are some things that pose a serious risk to your pet, Petmania have pulled together their top advice to keep them safe this Christmas:
Always make sure to sweep up any needles that have fallen off the tree and do not allow your pets near the tree unsupervised, regardless of whether it is real or artificial.
Keep decorations out of reach. Don’t place the tree near ‘launching pads’ such as a piece of furniture, to reduce the temptation from cat’s to spring onto it. Make sure your tree has a solid base.
Set up a quiet, comfortable area with little foot traffic for your pet to retreat into when mingling with the family gets a bit much for them. If they normally use a crate, move the crate away from where guests are to ensure your pet’s safe space is quiet.
It is important to have a chat with family to ensure the children know how to behave and react around your dog, cat, or small animal. They should know not to touch them while sleeping or eating. Children, no matter how old or young they are, shouldn’t be left unsupervised with a pet.
Food’s to avoid feeding your pet over the Christmas period include grapes and raisins, onions, garlic and chives, chocolate, macadamia nuts, Fatty foods or fat trimmings, alcohol, Cooked bones, mince pies and avocado.
