Our Lady’s Bower Transition Year students recently attended an insightful talk from Barbara Connolly from GreenThread, an organisation that aims to inform students of the environmental hazards associated with fast fashion.
The students had great fun upcycling old clothing that would otherwise have been dumped in landfills, as well as making hair scrunchies from scrap materials. This workshop proved particularly useful to our TY students, as they begin to generate ideas for their Junk Kouture sustainable fashion entries in the coming months.

TY Drumming Workshop
TY students further participated in a West African Drumming workshop, hosted by Dave Day from Jabba Jabba Jembe.
The workshop was focused on Polyrhythm drumming, whereby each drummer in the group plays a different beat to create one impressive sound. The students had the opportunity to try multiple different West African drums including Ewe, Jembe and Bata Drums.
Some beautiful music and rhythms could be heard from the TY block throughout the day and the workshop was enjoyed by all.

Basketball Success
Congratulations to Our Lady’s Bower senior basketball team, who had a convincing win against Mercy Ballymahon in their opening game of the season. The girls got off to a winning start with scores from Ellie Denby and Sara Gonzales resulting in 12-4 lead for the Bower at the end of the first quarter.
Despite having to defend off some tough opposition from the Ballymahon side, the team continued to dominate in the second, third, and fourth quarters as the girls tallied up constant points, with scores coming from Georgia Munnelly, Jillian Begley, Dorothy Obikoya and Maija Dickie. The game ended with a full-time score of 63-42 in favour of the Bower.
Well done also to the Cadette basketball team, who were unlucky not to come out on top in a close game against Mercy Ballymahon. The game was closely contested throughout, with OLB leading in the first quarter, and the second quarter ending in a 21-21 tie.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for the Cadette basketballers on this occasion, as they narrowly missed out on a win. Nonetheless, with some great passing and shooting from Alyssa Glynn and Maria Talabante, and some super scores from Niamh Purtill and Sarah Murray, the girls and coach Des O’Reilly are sure to make a strong comeback on their next outing.
