How to make your make-up look truly natural

When it comes to a natural look, less is more - overdoing the amount of product you apply can make your makeup look instantly heavier and cakier.

It’s very easy to go overboard with product application, which is why you need to be careful and light-handed when completing this look. After all, natural makeup is all about enhancing and celebrating your natural assets, not hiding them underneath layers of product.

Use cream/liquid products where possible

One of the aims of this look is to stay well away from a powdery and cakey-looking base. Try swapping your usual powder blush and bronzer for cream versions to achieve a glowy complexion. Cream highlighters are great for adding a healthy-looking sheen to your skin. Don’t get us wrong, powder products are by no means the enemy. It’s just that they are more appropriate for a full glam look, not a natural one.

Choose the right shade

This goes for both foundation and blush application. There’s nothing more unnatural looking than foundation that is strikingly different to your natural complexion. If your base looks unbalanced, you immediately lose the entire essence of the natural makeup look.

Choosing the right blush shade is equally as important when trying to perfect this look. Opt for a shade that matches your natural undertones well to mimic an authentic flush. Complexions with cooler undertones should choose a rosy pink shade, while peach and coral hues complement warmer skin tones.

Skip the full coverage

Never try to use full-coverage base products when attempting to do natural makeup as the outcome will always look heavier. We recommend skipping foundation altogether and just applying concealer where you need it. If you do, however, want a bit more coverage, apply a tinted moisturizer or BB cream instead.

We all love to apply a full coverage concealer to hide any evidence of a sleepless night. The truth is, a too-bright undereye can often look unnatural, not to mention that tons of product causes creasing. Instead, add a few dots of a light/ medium coverage concealer strategically to simultaneously lift and brighten the undereye area.

Stick to the bare minimum

Rule of thumb for natural makeup: if you don’t need it, don’t apply it. If your eyes look bright and awake just by curling your eyelashes, then you can easily skip mascara. If you’re blessed with naturally thick eyebrows, don’t add unnecessary product by filling them in. Similarly, if you have rosy lips, just pop on some gloss or lip balm and you’re good to go.
