A taste of exquisite Lebanese cuisine from Al Mezza Athlone

Savour the taste of exquisite Lebanese cuisine from Al Mezza restaurant located on Bastion Street within Athlone’s vibrant Latin Quarter.

Foods from Lebanon are considered a Mediterranean delicacy. They consist of fresh vegetarian dishes, salads and stews, all seasoned with a flavoursome combination of herbs and spices.

One of the most widely known Lebanese specialties is called the “meze”, also written “mezza”. This is a selection of appetizers - olives, cheeses or small portions, also known as mugabbilat (starters ), which are served all together to enhance and compliment the flavours of the dishes.

As with most Mediterranean foods, Lebanese cuisine is considered to be a very balanced and healthy diet, the cuisine of Lebanon being the epitome of the Mediterranean diet.

It includes an abundance of starches, fruits, vegetables, fresh fish and seafood. Animal fats are consumed sparingly, poultry is eaten more often than red meat and when red meat is eaten it is usually lamb.

It also includes copious amounts of garlic and olive oil, often seasoned by lemon juice – rarely has a meal gone by in Lebanon that does not include these ingredients.

Most often foods are grilled, baked or sautéed in olive oil or butter. Cream is rarely used other than in a few desserts. Vegetables are often eaten raw or pickled as well as cooked.

While Lebanese cuisine does not boast an entire repertoire of sauces, it focuses on herbs, spices and the freshness of ingredients and the assortment of dishes and combinations are almost limitless.

The meals are full of robust, earthy flavours, and like most Mediterranean countries, much of what the Lebanese eat is dictated by the seasons.

All food from Al Mezza is prepared and cooked on the premises so at times it may take a little longer than expected, especially when we are busy – good food is worth the wait!
