Mayo’s handball supporters will be out in force this weekend as the county features in all three matches on an excellent Moycullen card this Saturday from 3pm. Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann bid to reach their second successive All-Ireland senior doubles final when they take on Limerick duo Seamus O’Carroll and C J Fitzpatrick in the semi-final at the Galway venue. The Mayo pair have every reason to feel confident of a favourable result against the intermediate duo. Amy Corrigan gets matters under way as she takes on the impressive Catriona Casey of Cork in the girls’ minor singles final. Corrigan will have it all to do against the ever improving Casey but the Ballaghaderreen youngster has the edge in terms of experience. Stephen Cooney and Ian McLoughlin bid to follow up their great minor doubles success of last year when they take on Tadhg Carroll and John O’Keeffe of Cork in the under 21 doubles final, and on the evidence of their great record to date the pair should be celebrating another title.

The domestic rugby season is racing to its conclusion for another year and three Mayo sides are still in with a chance of glory in the Cawley Cup this weekend. Castlebar, Westport, and Ballina all made their way into the last four last weekend, setting up a local derby in one semi-final, with Westport hosting Castlebar in Carrowholly and Ballina making their way north to take on Sligo.
In the quarter finals Westport saw off border side Corrib by 10-7 with Kevin Corcoran touching down for the Bulls. Ballina did enough to hold off Tuam in Heffernan Park to record an 8-3 win, while Castlebar had more than enough to see off Dunmore on a score of 35-3. Sligo who will go into the last four as favourites to lift the title were easy winners over Portumna by a score of 40-12. The winners of Sunday’s semi-finals will have a long wait until May 17 to get to grips with each other in the final. Both semi-finals kick off at 3pm. The last time Mayo made the trip to Cork in the National Football League, they came out of Páirc Uí Rinn with a slender one point win and one foot in a league semi-final and consigned the Rebels to division two football for the next season. A lot has changed in the past two seasons since then for Mayo. Only five of the team that lined out that night started for Mayo in their last National Football League game against Monaghan; Liam O’Malley, Keith Higgins, Conor Mortimer, Andy Moran, and Alan Dillon. Mark Ronaldson came on as a sub three years ago as he did against Monaghan. Kenneth O’Malley, who was between the posts that night, is still involved in the panel as is Pat Harte, and the injured duo of Peadar Gardiner and Aidan Kilcoyne who also made an appearance in that game, the likes of James Kilcullen, Enda Devenney, Ger Brady, and Aidan Campbell who all started have fallen by the wayside, along with Marty McNicholas who kicked 0-2 that day after coming off the bench. David Heaney and Kevin O’Neill have both retired from the game.
