A large group of Mayo athletes were in action in Omagh in County Tyrone in the 21st Omagh Half Marathon recently. A record number of athletes took part with Clonliffe Harriers Sergiu Crobann completing the course to win the event in 1:07:44.
The first woman home was Letterkenny’s Maria Mc Cambridge in 1:15:56, and Paul Hannan won the wheelchair event. The first of Mayo’s athletes home was Robert Malseed in an excellent 10th position overall in a time of 1:14:40, followed home by Brendan Gill (M35 ) in an excellent 40th position in 1:19:43
Some very fine performances were recorded for David Conway (M40 ) who finished in 1:23:22 and Owen Mongan (M50 ) 1:35:44, with the much travelled and ever resilient Christy O’Malley (M40 ) finishing in 1:39:40. Jim Donnelly (M50 ) finished in a very strong 2:07:51 to bring home the Mayo AC contingent. Ballina AC’s Scott Walkin who finished in 1:26:27 and John O’Brien 1:28:40 were also in action in Omagh.
On a cold but dry day more than 60 people walked, jogged, and ran the Balla 4km recently. This event was organised chiefly by Brendan Conwell and the Balla No Name committee.
Some €1,000 was raised for a very worthy local charity. Kieran Horan of Mayo AC won the event and was followed home by his brother Shane Horan in second place. Horan had been placed ahead of him at the Ballinrobe 8km the week previously. In third position was Tommy Neville of Ballina AC. Angela O’Connor, Mayo AC, won the women’s section followed by Anne Murray, Mayo AC, in second position and Triona Moran, Ballina AC, in third place position.
