Castlebar Celtic are facing into a their opening game of the Newstalk A League this weekend with a injury crisis on their hands. Celtic will be without the services of Shane Hynes, Gary Price, Stevie Gavin, Ashley Stevenson, and Pat Fitzgerald on Saturday due to injury. But more importantly it looks like they will be without goalkeepers Danny O’Leary who has a groin injury and Robert Hennelly leaving them without a recognised number one between the posts. Castlebar Celtic manager Declan Kilkelly told the Mayo Advertiser this week, “ Danny had a great game last weekend against Carlow, but he played with a groin injury, he’s seeing a specialist, but we don’t know if he’ll be able to play any part in the game.” With no recognised goalkeeper available, Kilkelly could be in line for a place between the sticks himself for Celtic. “At the moment it looks like it could be me or an outfield player, but I’d prefer not to have to play, we just have to wait and see for now.”

You can rest assured that you will never have to worry too much about midges at Belmullet’s magnificent new GAA facilities if last Saturday evening is anything to go by. In what could best be described in these parts as a ‘fresh evening’, I was shivering however in light clothing for the first half of the challenge match between Mayo and Cavan. Conditions did improve weather wise for the second half, but sadly that’s as far as the improvement went. The match rarely produced any excitement and Mayo in particular will have learned little from this encounter. I parked myself close to the Cavan dugout for the first half and was quite relieved I wasn’t in the shoes, or should that be boots, of my close friend Tommy Carr. And if what I witnessed last Saturday is a reflection of their true worth at this juncture, they will need every one of the days between now and the end of June to get their act together. Mayo on the other hand won the game convincingly, but Johnno and his selectors will have learned little. They will be pleased however to have seen Tom Cunniffe back playing and injury free. He did well in the number six jersey and I think that he could line out in this position for the championship opener, particularly as Trevor Howley offers options at corner back or on the half back line. Big Barry Moran caught the eye again when introduced and he is another who should be guaranteed a starting berth in two weeks time. Tom Parsons is beginning to put himself about. He played well, with a couple of eye catching high fetches. The midfield selection for Sligo will be interesting with three players, Ronan McGarrity, Seamus O Shea and Tom Parsons all presenting a case for inclusion.

The eighth version of the very popular Carramore 10k race takes place tomorrow May 15 at 6pm, it is also race number one in the Mayo AC C & C Cellular league. A four mile walk takes place over a different course also starting at 6pm. The event organised by local man Christy Heneghan and his committee is in support of the Mayo -Roscommon Hospice. The race takes place over a generally flat course with a little hill on the last stretch. It is expected that many of the leading runners from around the west will be on the starting line, as in previous years, in the south Mayo village situated just off the main Claremorris to Hollymount road. Entries will be taken from 4.30pm in the community centre, dressing rooms and showers are available in the locality, and refreshments will be served after. The entry fee for the race is €10 and there is a cash prize for the top three finishers in the men’s and women’s section, and for places in the other categories. Points will be awarded for the top 25 finishers in the both men’s and women’s events for the road race league.

Management continuously search for the edge when preparing teams. And because they do, there will always be a variety of opportunists offering their services in the hope of cashing in on the back of a successful outfit. I have fallen into the trap myself, when I got a call from a ‘friend’ championing the quality of a sports psychologist. He came so highly recommended that I couldn’t wait to unleash him on the football squad. I recall sitting back at the rear of the room with a few fellow selectors. Within minutes we realised we had a dud on our hands. Out of respect we allowed him to complete his gig that particular time, but cancelled the remaining five sessions that were supposed to complete the package. My message to unsuspecting managers is to be careful of the articulate incompetent.
Training for the Mayo squad began in earnest last Friday night with what I heard was a very good workout in the form of a challenge match against Donegal. Challenge games present an ideal opportunity to experiment a little and also to rotate the team selection to keep everyone happy by rewarding commitment with a much needed start in a match. Donal Vaughan has been one of the real success stories of this year’s league campaign. I believe he is a very dedicated, disciplined person to train and those that have watched him over the last six months will recognise that he has got considerably bigger and stronger. He lined out at centre half back and was having a fine game until he picked up a very nasty mouth injury just before half time. Tom Cunniffe is also returning from injury and is another who could fill that berth. He appears to be back to fitness and will hopefully be a serious contender in a couple of weeks time. Another to catch the eye was the towering Barry Moran, lining out in the full forward position. He has been out injured for months so it was good for him to flag his undoubted ability with an impressive performance. I believe he ended up with a tally of 1-4 which is impressive by any standards. I watched him play for the Mitchels in their narrow one point defeat to Breaffy two weeks ago and I was hugely impressed with his display, albeit he didn’t feature in the first half of that game due to some ‘niggle’. If he manages to stay injury free, and that’s a big if, as he is incredibly unlucky with injuries over the last few years, he will present Aidan O’Shea with a serious challenge for the full forward berth.

It’s now or never for the Mayo hurlers on Saturday afternoon in Charlestown in the Christy Ring Cup losers play off against Down. Last weekend Mayo were kicked out of the front door of the competition by Wicklow in Arklow, the garden county ran out 1-19 to 2-12 winners over Mayo thanks in the most part to a strong 15 minute period in the second half where they hit run of unanswered points.
