Soccer academy launched in Mayo

Ciarán Kelly, the Mayo native who saved all four penalties in Sligo Rovers’ famous FAI Ford Cup final win last month, is launching a new soccer academy. The academy is aimed at boys and girls between the ages of six and 13, and will kick off with weekly coaching sessions in Castlebar, Knock, Ballyheane, Ballinrobe and Claremorris.

Exciting finale to Mayo AC 2010 League

It began with the Carramore 10k in May and will reach its exciting conclusion with the Westport 5k on Sunday December 12 it is the Mayo AC, C&C Cellular league which once again proved an outstanding success this year. This is the 12th year that this popular race series has been held and the fifth time to be supported by the C&C Cellular Group. Over the years many runners have been discovered through the league races with many going on to achieve national success since. While some of the league prizewinners are already known there is still a lot of running to be done in Westport before the prizes are paid out at the post race presentation in Hotel Westport.

Carnacon look to inch over the line again

n Banagher on Sunday, weather permitting, Carnacon and old foes Inch Rovers will come face to face with the All Ireland senior title at stake. Sunday’s meeting in Offaly will be the third meeting of these sides in the final in four years, with Carnacon winning both finals and now looking to make it three out of three against the Cork club. The 2007 meeting in the final saw Carnacon win out by 11 points on a score of 2-14 to 1-6, while in 2008 putting back to back titles together Carnacon won by five points to seal their double.

BMX track a big hit with bikers

More than 100 people turned up to the launch of the floodlights at the BMX track on the Kilmaine road, Ballinrobe. John Murphy chairperson of Western Lakes CC highlighted that this work, which started back in 2007, has now paid dividends with large numbers from various backgrounds participating on a weekly basis.

Cooney narrowly loses out on US trip

The main business of the weekend was the Irish Junior 40x20 Nationals held at Cavan and Monaghan venues. Lorraine Havern of Down beat second seed Shauna Hilley from Wicklow in impressive fashion in a surprisingly one-sided final. Both Stephen Cooney and Ian McLoughlin were contenders in the top boys’ event the 19 and under singles. McLoughlin was an early casualty as he was well beaten by Patrick Funchion from Kilkenny, however Cooney, the number two seed, had a great tournament. He accounted for Cian Connolly of Roscommon, 216, 21-9 in his opening match and then he beat all-Ireland minor singles finalist, Padraig O’Carroll of Limerick 21-13, 21-13 to reach the decider against the number one seed, Caolan Daly of Tyrone.

Winter league comes to conclusion in Ballina

In last weekend’s club Stableford competition, Ray Mannion was the winner in the gents’ section with a score of 42pts. Second place was taken by James Lavin whose back nine scoring saw him hold off Stephen Minogue in third place after both men finished on 36pts. The ladies’ competition was won by Geraldine O’Malley with a score of 35pts. She finished just one point ahead of Marie Flanagan in second place on 34pts, and Mary Conlon took third place with a score of 33pts thanks to her scoring on the back nine.

Three Mayo athletes awarded NUI Galway sports scholarships

At a special ceremony at NUI Galway on Tuesday, 24 new recipients of NUI Galway student sports scholarships, three of whom are Mayo natives, were presented by chairman of the NUI Galway Sport and Recreation Union Committee, Ruadhán Cooke. The recipients joined the 30 existing holders of NUI Galway sports scholarships. NUI Galway supports high performing athletes in a wide range of sports through its sports scholarship programme.
