Celtic look to remain unbeaten in Women’s League

Fri, Dec 02, 2011

Three games in and it is so far so good for Castlebar Celtic in the Bus Éireann Women’s National League. Jeremy Dee’s charges have five points on the table and are unbeaten thanks to a win and two draws so far. Their latest point came after another long trip away to Cork Women’s FC which leaves them well placed in the table. On Sunday, Celtic will face another tough test when Peamount United come to town. The Dublin side are one of the top women’s side in the game and recently were in UEFA European action representing Ireland. Aileen Gilroy and Shauna Jackson were the scorers for Celtic last weekend in their hard fought draw. This weekend’s opponents saw off the challenge of the Cork side, Celtic drew with on a 6-1 scoreline on the opening day of the league, they followed that up with a 7-0 over Wexford Youths (another side whom Celtic have drawn with this term). However they are coming off the back of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Raheny United last weekend and will be looking to get back on track against Celtic. The game against Peamount United is scheduled to kick off in Celtic Park at 2pm on Sunday, December 4.

GAA referees seem to attract controversy, is it justified?

Thu, Nov 24, 2011

I am travelling to Dangan twice weekly training the NUIG footballers. The training is going well but unfortunately the results are not matching so far. The senior squad played three league matches against GMIT, Sligo IT, and Athlone IT, and unfortunately lost all three. Both Tomas Tierney and I agreed we would use the league to try to have a look at as many players as possible. This meant a loss of continuity in selection and with it a series of disjointed performances. Those three lost games meant we were drawn into a relegation play off. We lost the first play off game last week against DIT and we have one final game against UL next week.

Schools soccer

Thu, Nov 24, 2011

On Wednesday November 9, Davitt College, Castlebar, played against St Mary’s Secondary School at Celtic Park, in Castlebar. St Mary’s put up a great fight to begin with, but when Erina Flannery put a ball in the back net after 10 minutes Davitt College attacked forcefully. Flannery’s goal was followed by a goal from Melissa Patterson, who put up a fantastic fight up front. The third goal was scored by Anna Tully and was well deserved, as she put up a blinding performance at left wing. The fourth goal was scored again by Melissa Patterson. However Patterson did not obtain a hat-trick as the fifth goal was scored by Kirstin Sheerin. Sheerin, who put up a fantastic performance in goal last year, played centre field and demonstrated remarkable skill and endurance. Davitt will go on to play Ursuline College, Sligo, to qualify for the Connacht quarter finals.

Celtic women host Rovers on Sunday

Fri, Nov 18, 2011

Castlebar Celtic women’s side took their first footsteps at the top level of women’s soccer in the country last weekend when they kicked off their Bus Éireann Women’s National League Campaign away to Wexford Youths. The long trip to Ferrycarrig Park was worth the journey as Celtic came home with a point in the bag after a 2-2 draw. Celtic twice took the lead through star striker Emma Mullin who was played up top as a long striker for the hoops, but Wexford were able to pull a goal back each time to ensure it finished in a stalemate.

It could have been worse for Celtic who had goalkeeper Ashling Concannon save a penalty for them during the game.
