Carnacon looking for lucky number four

Having picked up three ladies’ All Ireland senior club titles inside the past decade Carnacon are back in the final on Sunday and looking to turn that triple of championships into a quadruple. The girls in green and red have made their way back to the final this year and after narrowly losing out to Inch Rovers from Cork in last year’s showpiece, they will have extra motivation to make this All Ireland number four for the central Mayo club. Standing in their way in Ballymahon in two days’ time will be Dublin and Leinster champions, Na Fianna. The Dublin ladies saw off the challenge of Munster and Cork champions Donoughmore by four points at the start of the month.

Carnacon booked their own spot in Sunday's game thanks to a hard fought single point win over the Ulster champions Donaghmoyne on a scoreline of 0-11 to 1-7. A final quarter flurry of half a dozen points without reply propelled Carnacon into Sunday's final showdown. Cora Staunton was once again to the fore for Carnacon, kicking five of her side’s points, four of those scores in the final flurry. While Staunton after so many years is still the marquee name on the team-sheet for Carnacon, there are plenty of other experienced stars of the ladies game lining out for Carnacon on Sunday. Fiona McHale, Claire Egan, Martha Carter, Sharon McGing, Aoife Loftus, and Noelle Tierney have all been there and done it before, and their experience will be vital against the Metropolitans when the ball is thrown in on Sunday afternoon.

To add some extra spice to Sunday's encounter the side from the capital will have their own Mayo contingent looking to pick up an All Ireland medal, former Mayo captain and All Star winner Claire O'Hara, along with Ciara McDermott, will be facing down a number of old inter county team-mates in Ballymahon, those friendships built up in the green and red over the years will be put to one side until the final whistle in Sunday's game. The game will throw in at 2pm in Ballymahon, Longford, on Sunday afternoon.
