Andy Moran is on the way back
The inspirational Ballaghaderren man who was on Maor Uisce duties in Ballyhaunis last weekend for the opening round of the FBD League is coming back to fitness. Moran took part in the warm up before the game with a number of other players. Mayo supporters will be hoping to see him back in action again sooner rather than later.
Celtic double up on the national front

“When it rains it pours” the saying goes and for Castlebar Celtic this Sunday it is certainly pouring with options for the supporters of the Hoops. Both the men’s team and women’s team have home ties in national competitions kicking off at 2pm on Sunday.

Over the Christmas and New Year period, the club scramble competition was won by the trio of Breege Jennings, Geraldine Evans and Tim Evans. Second place went to the team of Pat Kilgallon, Ciaran Canny and Sean Canny, with third place going to Dermot MacMahon, Pat Mohan and Martin Moylette. Last weekend’s stableford competition was won by PJ Brett with a score of 37. Brett’s play on the back nine kept Martin Moylette back in second place after he also finished on a score of 37, with Aodan McSuibhnie coming home in third place.
Harlequin Adventure Duathlon

The Harlequin Adventure Duathlon will be held on Saturday March 24 with a start time of 9am. This race is a mix of running, cycling and mountain running, very much like the famous Gaelforce event which has proved to be a big hit in the Leenane/Westport area, Now Castlebar can boast about an event of its own with equally as stunning and challenging terrain.

The Mayo AC Fit4Life groups in association with Mayo Sports Partnership, resumes this week after the festive break. The increasingly popular weekly sessions which cater for all fitness levels from beginners upwards, are an ideal opportunity for people of all ages to improve their health and wellbeing. They take place in a safe sociable environment and at low cost and are open to people over 18, with no upper age limit. All centres have trained team leaders in attendance catering for those who wish to walk, jog, or run or who want to progress from one of those levels to another.

Des McWilliam is one of Ireland’s best-known sail makers. Over the years he has made sails for Round The World racers, Mirrors, circumnavigating cruisers, Ton Cup Winners, Chinese junks, Admiral's Cuppers, Achill Yawls, and Commodore's Cuppers. He founded the business in Crosshaven in 1978, and has been designing, making and repairing sails there ever since. Mayo Sailing Club are hosting a lecture on Sail Trim by Des in GMIT on Thursday January 19 at 7.30pm. Des is a very accomplished sailor in his own right, having represented Ireland in five Admiral's Cups and in regattas from the Southern Cross to the Atlantic Challenge. This talk is aimed at sailors of all craft, from dinghies up to ocean-crossing cruisers, and indeed for anybody who wants to get involved in sailing, this could prove to be a very good meeting place.

It was not exactly back with a bang, but inter-county football was back last weekend for Mayo when they took on and defeated a hard working Leitrim side. January throws up very little in definite road signs for the direction the summer will take, but there were a few new options in route planning on show that will have given both James Horan and the Mayo supporters something to think about in the coming weeks and months.

Conncht Rugby may not be in the best place at the moment, but veteran Michael Swift reckons there is nowhere better to play than the home of French champions Toulouse this weekend. Having lost opportunities over the last month to halt a losing sequence, the most capped Connacht player says travelling to the home of the European aristocrats for Saturday’s Heineken Cup fourth round fixture will inspire another strong performance.
