Celtic double up on the national front

“When it rains it pours” the saying goes and for Castlebar Celtic this Sunday it is certainly pouring with options for the supporters of the Hoops. Both the men’s team and women’s team have home ties in national competitions kicking off at 2pm on Sunday.

The men’s side will face a tough task against a very fancied Sheriff YC side in the sixth round of the FAI Junior Cup in Celtic Park. The prize that is up for grabs for Celtic is a place in the last 16 and a home time against either St Michael’s FC or Wicklow Rovers in four weeks’ time.

At the same time the Celtic women’s side will continue their campaign in the Bus Éireann Women’s National League when Raheny United come to Castlebar in the sixth round of the league. The sides met in the last round before Christmas in Raheny and played out a 10 goal thriller which finished 5-5. That game will take place in Milebush Park, the home of the Mayo League. A win for Celtic’s women’s side would cement their place in third place and close the gap on a Raheny side who are currently seven points ahead of them at the top of the table.

It is not just the county town which has sides in action in national competitions this weekend, with Claremorris also in action in the men’s FAI Junior Cup on Sunday, they will travel to Ballymote looking for a place in the sixth round of the competition where Carrick United are waiting to battle it out for a place in the last 16 of the competition. In the Connacht Cup Ballinrobe Town will travel to St Bernard’s, and Clew Bay United will host Loughrea in the Connacht Shield.
