Mayo look to get back on track on the road

Mayo will make their second trip to Ulster in three weeks when they head to Ballyshannon on Sunday to take on a Donegal side who are rooted to the bottom of division one of the National Football League. The Ulster champions have only picked up one win in their four games so far in the campaign, that win was a surprise win against defending league champions Cork in Ballybofey a fortnight ago. Along with a defeat to Kerry last Sunday, Jim McGuinness’s side have also been beaten by Down and Laois in this year so far.

The best of the Mayo League will be going up against the best that the League of Ireland has to offer this spring after the league accepted an invitation from the FAI to enter the league cup this season. The Mayo League will be the only junior team in the competition. Mayo League chairman Padraic McHale said on the announcement that he was “delighted to receive the invitation, and would be a further stepping stone for many of our players, to play in a higher grade of football”.
The draw for the group stage of the cup was made on Wednesday and the Mayo League have been pitted in pool two alongside Finn Harps, Derry City, Sligo Rovers, Fanad United and Monaghan United. The Mayo League were drawn to play Finn Harps on Monday, March 26, in the first round. The Mayo League held its AGM in Milebush Park last night at 8pm, and a healthy debate on a number of topics was expected to take place among the delegates and the league management committee. The Mayo League also announced earlier this week that the Quigley Cup final between Castlebar Celtic and Ballyheane has been moved from Manulla to Milebush, the game will kick off at 2pm in the Mayo League headquarters.

The stage is set for a weekend of high-octane motorsport action, as the McWilliam Park Hotel and Fleet Transport magazine Mayo Stages Rally arrives into town today. With many of the best rally drivers and state-of-the-art rally cars set to do battle over 120 kilometres of special stages to the north of Claremorris, there promises to be spills and thrills aplenty before the action concludes back at rally headquarters The McWilliam Park Hotel on Sunday evening.

In the men’s stableford competition last weekend Pat Mohan was the winner of the competition on a score of 41pts. Pat Kilgallon came home in second place on 36pts with Martin Moylette taking third. The ladies’ competition was won by Catherine McNulty on a score of 39pts, with Mary Brett on 38pts in second and Aine McDonald third on 35pts. The club will be holding a table quiz tomorrow at 9.30pm in Mannion’s bar. The prize giving ceremony for the Winter League will take place on the night also. The captain’s drive in will take place at 12.30pm on Sunday and will be followed by a scramble competition.

Former rugby international Alan Quinlan was “Tagged in Westport” as he announced details of the west of Ireland’s inaugural Tag Rugby Festival taking place on Friday May 18 and Saturday May 19 in Westport.
The Westport Plaza and Castlecourt Hotel Resort in association with Westport Rugby Club will host the inaugural sporting event with a full weekend of entertainment planned, both on and off the pitch. Some 300 players are expected to take the tag challenge to be crowned the 2012 ‘Tagged in Westport’ champions.

March may only be a few days old, but for one Mayo team it is do or die in the championship as soon as next Wednesday. Ray Dempsey’s u21 side will entertain Galway under lights in McHale Park at 7.30pm in the preliminary round of the competition. The Tribesmen are the defending All Ireland champions after beating Cavan in last year’s final. Many of this year’s crop of Mayo u21s will have had their own All Ireland final experience, being part of a Mayo minor side that went down to Armagh in the All Ireland minor final three years ago. Cillian O’Connor will be Mayo’s stand out man in attack, while Danny Kirby of whom there big things are expected will be another man to look out for on Wednesday night. If Mayo come out of next Wednesday’s game with a win, they will be in action the following Wednesday night against Roscommon in the Connacht semi-final.

Another exciting chapter in the athletics life of Mayo AC's John Byrne was written on Saturday. The story began at 10am deep within Donadea Forest Park in Kildare. Sixty-five brave souls gathered for the Donadea 50k, excellently organised by Donadea Running Club. The race doubled as the Irish 50k Championships.

Matt Leonard was the winner of the weekend stableford competition in the club last weekend with a score of 38pts. His play on the back nine was enough to keep him in front of PJ Brett in second place with John Parsons taking third on 34pts. The ladies’ competition was won by Breda Cleary with a score of 36pts, it was only her back six scoring that held off Aine McDonald in second, with Breege Jennings taking third with 33pts. The winter league is still in full swing with Catherine McNulty and Martin Moylette in the lead on 391pts. They are being chased in second place by Paraic Cuffe and Breege Moran on 369pts.

Last weekend GMIT Kayak and Canoe Club, Castlebar, made history by hosting the 2012 Kayaking Intervarsities for the first time. Eighteen colleges attended, and approximately 500 students from all over the country made their way to Castlebar with trailers packed full of colourful boats.
