Good showing at National Masters Cross Country Championships

Mayo AC started the year with an excellent medal winning performance at the National Masters Cross Country Championships at Gransha Park, Derry, on Sunday last. Not for the first time their masters women’s athletes put the year’s first medals on the table and continued a formidable club record.

The men’s competition was won by Sean Canny with a score of 36pts, Chris Mannion finished in second place one point further back, with Oliver Moran finishing in third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Breege Moran with a score of 36pts, Rose O’Connor came home in second place and Mary Joe Cannon was in third place. After eight rounds of the Winter League, Jimmy Sheridan and Breege Moran are out in top on 371pts. Chris Mannion and Tim Evans are back in second place with John Parsons and Carmel Henry in third place.

The Irish rally season, and more specifically the Irish Tarmac Championships, roared into action over the weekend with the Safety Direct Galway International Rally. The event took place over a challenging, eight special stages, run in a one day format. Triple British Rally Champion, Keith Cronin, from Cork, really showed his talent through the day’s slippy and tough stages, by upping his pace on virtually every stage to win the event, ahead of former multiple Irish Tarmac Rally Champion, Eugene Donnelly.

In last weekend’s men’s stableford competition, Tom Jennings was the winner with a score of 35pts after a very tight finish. Martin Moylette finished second with Mick Mellett in third place. In the ladies’ competition, Marie Flanagan was the winner on 33pts, with Pat Dillon in second place and Geraldine O’Malley in third. After seven rounds of the Winter League, Jimmy Sheridan and Breege Moran are out in front on a score of 308pts. John Parsons and Carmel Henry are in second place on 303pts, with John O’Connor and Nora Gibbons in third spot on 300pts.
Five wins for hosts at Eagle tournament

The Eagle club held a short programme of 10 contests last Saturday night in the Wyatt Hotel in Westport. The host club had seven boxers on the night’s bill and picked up five wins out of those contests, marking a very successful night for the club. The best bout of the night went to the meeting of Kieran Roody from Eagle and Eoin McDonnell from the Ardagh/Crossmolina club in a contest that saw Roody come out on top. The meeting of Patrick Lawrence (Eagle) and Anthony Leonard (Ardagh/Crossmolina) was another top encounter with the local again picking up the win. The clash of Damien Joyce (Ballinrobe) and Patrick Fallon (Monivea) was another tough three round bout with the Mayo boxer just getting the nod on the night to have his hand raised in victory.

The AGM of Mayo Athletics County Board took place in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar recently. Paddy Kelly, chairperson, welcomed everybody to the meeting especially the new club Aughagower. He congratulated Claremorris Athletic Club on the development of the new tartan track. He thanked all who helped out during the year in any capacity to help with the smooth running of competitions etc. Secretary Amanda Hynes presented her report to the meeting. Padraic Walsh treasurer presented a very healthy balance sheet to those present. He thanked the sponsors C & C Cellular because without them they would not be in a position to host their annual awards in the present format. The Mayo County Board Athletic Awards will be held in Westport on Sunday, February 17 at 2pm.

They may not be the current kings of the game, but the thought of getting one over Kerry is something that supporters from every other county still relishes. On Sunday in Elverys McHale Park, Mayo will start their Allianz National Football League campaign looking to give those there in support of the green and red that very same satisfaction come full time, and set themselves up nicely to retain their division one status at the very least.
