Local knowledge pays dividends when local Castlebar man Peter Tuohy of the J2P Team took a comprehensive win at the fifth and last round of the hugely successful Ireland West Duathlon series. Tuohy laid the foundation for his success with a storming bike leg that gave him 60seconds advantage and some breathing space over the hard chasing Brendan Conway Westport Tri, who is a renowned runner. The final 5k run on the out and back new Turlough Greenway turned into a sprint between the two leaders with Tuohy holding Conway off for a brilliant win. Third on the day was the ever consistent Jonathon Rowland from Liquid motion Tri club Ballina.

A completely revamped course using the beautiful Greenway to Turlough and the bike route using the quite roads around Parke and Pontoon this new course is suitable for all abilities and should be a participant joy to take part in. The Castlebar Adventure Duathlon is now longer but considerably flatter than its predecessor at 39k, with No Booster Mountain to climb no Rathbawn hills to cycle the new course is more forgiving. There is only one distance this year for individuals but there is a relay option and this category has proven very popular throughout the series.

Conditions were tough for the 12th Annual Tuam 8k last Sunday. For many this race is one of the best of the West's early season tests. Persistent rain swept across Connacht but lightened off for the race. However, a chilly headwind on the early kilometres along open sections of the course made it difficult for the 387 finishers.
GCH swept the board taking five of the six top men/women podium prizes. Winner Gary Thornton was 12 seconds faster than last year in 24:22. He's aiming for a good time in the 36th Rotterdam Marathon (it's on the same day as the National 10k - April 10) and edge into the top four Irish men for Rio Olympics.

It was an historic day for Hollymount. There was a real buzz about the village as the 50th Anniversary International road races took place on Sunday. Conditions on the day were tough to say the least. It was a day for digging in, supporting, enduring and above all celebrating a unique event in Irish athletics. For a race that was 'baptised' in 1966, uisce played a big part in the day, not least during the short flood on the Kilrush loop. It never dampened the enthusiasm or enjoyment of participants, and reminded us that sport reveals the greatest of the human spirit. And we needed that reminder after recent events.

Autumn temperatures soared on a sunny sporting Sunday at the fifth Breaffy 10k. It was also the final race in Mayo AC Vodafone 2015 Move2Improve series. The conditions were welcome but made extra demands on endurance and energy over the testing undulating terrain.
Last year's winner Matt Bidwell (GCH) led the field home in first place in 32:43, a fine win but well outside his 2014 course record of 31:59. Richard Gorman (Sligo AC) has been in great form recently and he came home in 33:20 as he focuses on Dublin. Davd Tiernan (Mayo AC) was third, two minutes behind in 35:22.
