Bidwell and Tuohy win Breaffy 10k

Autumn temperatures soared on a sunny sporting Sunday at the fifth Breaffy 10k. It was also the final race in Mayo AC Vodafone 2015 Move2Improve series. The conditions were welcome but made extra demands on endurance and energy over the testing undulating terrain.

Last year's winner Matt Bidwell (GCH ) led the field home in first place in 32:43, a fine win but well outside his 2014 course record of 31:59. Richard Gorman (Sligo AC ) has been in great form recently and he came home in 33:20 as he focuses on Dublin. Davd Tiernan (Mayo AC ) was third, two minutes behind in 35:22.

Colette Tuohy (Mayo AC ) was also a clear winner coming home first in the women’s race in 39:09, identical to her 2014 second place, and she maintains her good form ahead of the Masters Cross Country trial next Sunday. It was a close race with just a minute separating the top three. Kathy Gleeson continued her improving form finishing 30 seconds behind Tuohy, with Paula Prendergast (Mayo AC ) equalling her 2014 finish in third place in 40:16.

Mayo AC claimed both o50 prizes through local duo Michael Sweeney and Angela O'Connor. Ann Murray was second o50 and will be boosted by her 44:32 finish ahead of her marathon debut.

Kevin McGing from Breaffy GAA thanked all the organisers and helpers on and off the course. Once again, Maggie Heneghan and her team organised a brilliant event.
