Castlebar Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere has warned of the dangers of people walking on frozen lakes and river surfaces. While many of these surfaces appear to be strong enough to support the weight of a person, the risk of any ice breaking is very high and could lead to serious accidents. The dangerously cold weather is making this particularly hazardous as the water is extremely cold.

Comhairle Shóisearach Mhaigh Eo based in Newtown, Castlebar, has been awarded €5,000 under the Artist in Youth Work Scheme run by the National Youth Council of Ireland’s Youth Arts programme to script and edit a documentary on local politics and how young people can have a voice in matters which affect them at a local and national level.

The swine flu vaccination clinic at Mayo General Hospital will be open on Mondays and Thursdays only from next Monday, January 18. It is intended that some of the staff from this clinic will be redeployed to work with the school vaccination teams in Mayo.

Independent Councillor Frank Durcan has called for the acting county manager Joe Beirne to consider his position after he accused him of benefiting from the change of a junction on the Pontoon/Turlough Road in Castlebar. Cllr Durcan alleged to a meeting of Mayo County Council that Mr Beirne had not fulfilled his duties in disclosing his interests in a property in the area where the works were being carried out. The property Cllr Durcan referred to is the premises where Mr Beirne’s wife carries out her business.
