Costly Chorus saga put to bed

The Chorus saga which has dogged Castlebar Town Council for the last number of years has ended with the council having to fork out €162,000 in settlements and legal fees over the release of a €152,369 bond lodged with them by the company. An out of court settlement saw the council hand over €100,000 to Chorus and then pay out €62,000 in legal expenses.

Jail for woman who assaulted her child’s father’s new partner

A 26-years-old who was charged with a section two assault on a woman on New Year’s Day, after she fired a glass at the woman in a public bar, was sentenced to jail by Judge Mary Devins at Ballinrobe District Court this week.

Green Schools travel initiative launched at Scoil Raifteirí

Scoil Raifteirí in Castlebar along with 19 other Mayo schools are in the throes of preparing to receive their fourth green flags. The latest addition to the Green Flag project is the Green Schools travel initiative which was piloted in the east and is being rolled out in Mayo for the first time to 20 schools who have already received the first three green flags.

Westport to host Turas na mBan

The town of Westport is to host Turas na mBan, a weekend dedicated to celebrating the journey of women, which takes place in the Knockranny House Hotel on Friday and Saturday October 17 and 18. President praises community effort in Newport

The presidential motorcade was greeted by hundreds of flag waving children from the Holy Family National School last Tuesday morning in Newport as it turned up towards Cuan Modh Day Care. After passing under a banner that traversed the Main Street welcoming the President to the town, showcasing the pride the town had in welcoming Ireland’s first citizen to their town. The community sprit that was shown by the locals was echoed and welcomed by President McAleese when she spoke at the official opening of the centre, where she remarked on the hard work and commitment put in by all the locality in getting the centre off the ground from an idea to the facility it is today.
