Woman stole from Castlebar clothes store

A woman from Castlebar who stole a number of items from a clothes store pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court this week.

Tina McDonagh, 56 An Sruthain, Castlebar pleaded guilty to the charges arising out of an incident on July 2 this year after gardaí were called to Sara, Cavendish Lane following a report that a woman was causing trouble in the store.

Inspector Michael Murray outlined that the defendant, who was in a changing room in the shop, was roaring and shouting at the garda when she was asked to come out. When she emerged from the dressing room the garda noticed that the defendant was wearing a pair of yellow shorts under her tracksuit bottoms (which was seen through a hole in McDonagh’s tracksuit bottoms ). The garda’s attention was drawn to these shorts as there had been a report earlier in the day that a pair of yellow shorts had been stolen from another store in town. As McDonagh went to exit from the store the security alarm went off.

The defendant was subsequently arrested and later searched at Castlebar Garda Station where she was found to have three vest tops from Sara concealed under her garments, and the pair of yellow shorts.

Defending solicitor Aidan Crowley said that McDonagh, who has previous convictions, committed this crime when she was on a suspended sentence which was imposed at Castleblaney District Court.

Judge Mary Devins remanded the defendant in custody to appear before Castleblaney District Court on October 20.
