A four hour workshop over two evenings on the Code of Ethics and Best Practice in Sport will be held in Westport, on Tuesday January 27 and Wednesday January 28 as part of Mayo Sports Partnerships New Sport Volunteer Training Programme for 2009. The course will start at 7.30pm each evening and finish at 9.30pm.

Mayo County Council and the Mayo County Development Board have received three grants from the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources under the BenefIT scheme. This funding will allow for the further roll-out of supports to communities to provide technology training and equipment.

A group exhibition at the Sea, Sky Shore Gallery, James Street, Westport, featuring work made by the following artists at Custom House Studios during 2008; Cecilia Bullo, Breda Burns, Nick Devaney, Pam Gray, Christina Heraty, Niall McCormack, Sinead Wall, Ian Wieczorek, and Katja Wittmer will be opened by Councillor Margaret Adams, chairperson of Custom House Studios, on Thursday January 29 at 6pm. The Fianna Fáil party in Castlebar saw the establishment of a new cumann in the town this week. On Monday evening a new Castlebar Fianna Fáil cumann was established when the Mícheál Ó Moráin and the Johnny Jordan cumainn amalgamated at a meeting in the Welcome Inn Hotel. But the amalgamation still leaves the Castlebar town cumann as a separate entity.

A “dramatic” change in situation in the case of Edith Orumwenes, who claims to be the victim of human trafficking, was heard in Castlebar District Court on Wednesday, after a Garda investigation may have identified her as a woman who was working under the professional name of “Joy Jolly” in Clonmel during the time she claims that she was held captive in a house in Castlebar.
