Castlebar councillors propose funding for Main Street works

At the Castlebar Area Committee Meeting on Monday it was proposed that €300,000 from a €390,000 social and economic fund will be put towards Castlebar’s Main Street refurbishments, boosting total funding for the project to €900,000 — with the town and county council also funding €300,000 each.

WDC welcomes renewable energy developments

The Western Development Commission has welcomed the Government’s Micro Generation Programme which will offer homes and farms across the Western Region the opportunity to reduce energy costs and earn a guaranteed income of 19 cent per kilowatt hour for excess electricity produced.

This was according to Frank Fullard, director of the Mayo County Enterprise Board, who addressed members of the Planning and Economic Development SPC this week.

Man ordered to pay €600 for operating illegal taxi

A Claremorris man was fined €600 and given the benefit of the probation act in Ballinrobe District Court last week after he pleaded guilty to acting as an illegal taxi driver. The court heard that John McHugh, Caltragh, Claremorris, picked up two women on the night of August 30 2008 at a pub in Hollymount and dropped them off at another pub in Ballyglass. When the women realised the next day that McHugh was not a legal taxi they made a complaint to the gardaí. When they spoke to McHugh he admitted to the charge.

Delisting of house causes debate in Ballina Chamber

The delisting of a historical house as part of the Ballina Town Development plan caused some debate in the council chamber this week. Cllr Tommy Cooke called on Paddy Mahon, town manager, to meet with the family in question and sort out the situation, an idea that was supported by a number of the councillors in the chamber.

Last chance for man who smashed shop window

Judge Geoffrey Browne gave a man with a long history of convictions one last chance in Ballyhaunis District Court this week. Stephen King, Apartment 2, Pinewoods, Station Road, Castlebar, pleaded guilty to criminal damage charges after he threw a gas cylinder through a shop window in Ballyhaunis. The court heard that on February 13 2009 King entered Moran’s shop in Ballyhaunis and bought a packet of cigarettes and handed over a €10 note and was given his change. He came back a short time later and said he had handed in a €50 note, when he was told it was €10 he became aggressive and abusive, which culminated in King going outside and throwing a gas cylinder through the window of the shop causing €340 worth of damage.

Review of Regional Planning Guidelines gets under way

Members of the county council’s planning and economic development strategic policy committee have proposed that a submission be forwarded to the West Regional Authority in order to be included in the Regional Planning Guidelines 2004-2016.

Number on housing list alarms Ballina councillors

The news that there are currently 581 people on the housing waiting list in Ballina Town council alarmed the elected members at the monthly meeting this week. Town clerk Carmel Murphy told the meeting that a review of the list is being carried out, but at present there were 581 people on the list which was a marked rise on the numbers in the recent past.
