A 31 per cent increase in the number of people failing breath tests over the month of February in County Mayo, shows the battle against drink-driving is never ending. If St Patrick's Day revellers decide to drive drunk, they had better have more than the 'luck of the Irish' to cover the financial consequences of a drunk driving arrest. A campaign is being launched in Mayo which will tie into the Road Safety Authority’s message to “Never, ever, drink and drive”.

FG proposes €35 million saving through Dáil and Seanad cuts

Fine Gael’s Deputy Michael Ring, spokesperson on community, rural, and Gaeltacht affairs, has said the €35 million in savings brought about by the party’s Oireachtas reforms could be used for services like transport for hospital appointments, water and sewerage schemes, roads, etc. Dep Ring said the package included a reduction by eight of the number of junior ministers, cutting the number of joint Oireachtas committees by 10, ending the practice of paying fees to those holding positions on those committees, no ministerial pensions to be paid while the member is still serving in either house of the Oireachtas, direct elections for 20 of the Seanad seats, and extending the Dáil sitting week from three to four days.

County engineer warns that roadworks funds could be withdrawn

County Engineer Joe Beirne warned the elected members of Mayo County Council that the there could be a scale back on the roadworks budget that was agreed by the council at their budget meeting. Beirne told the members that the council received a letter from the Department of Transport on February 26 which outlined that “The department is compiling data on existing contractual legal commitments on foot of regional and local road grants allocated to your authority, and potential new commitments to be entered into in 2009”. It went on to say that “New contractual commitments will now require prior approval by the Department of Finance. Accordingly, pending completion of the data by the department and securing the necessary Department of Finance sanction, no further contractual commitments on foot of regional and local road grants may be entered into by your authority”.

Students create peace path for Castlebar riverside walk

Students from Holly Lodge Girls' College, Liverpool; Davitt College in Castlebar, and the Istituto D'Istruzione Superiore in Roseto, Italy with the help from Ryanair Europe’s largest low cost airline are transporting a 13 piece mosaic path to Castlebar in Ireland to celebrate World Peace. The Peace Path will be laid on the new Castlebar Riverside Walk.

The Peace Path project started in 2007, when teachers and pupils started to look at opportunities to make a major and lasting input to the Liverpool Capital of Culture programme 2008 and to highlight and mark the UN Decade of Educating for a Culture of Peace and non-violence for the world’s children in the 21st Century.

Mayo finalist in Baileys Young Chef competition

A young chef from Mayo has reached the final stages of the 2009 Baileys Euro-Toques Young Chef Competition. Twenty-three-year-old Patrick Powell is one of five finalists in total. He is from Killala and works at Knockranny House Hotel. To get to this stage Patrick had to submit his CV and recipe that took into account current economic climate and environmental trends for a seasonal main course dish for four people, incorporating local and artisan produce at a value-for-money cost. Entrants were then invited to attend a panel interview in Dublin conducted by chefs and founding Euro-toques members John Howard and Gerry Galvin, past winner Neven Maguire and Euro-toques secretary general Ruth Hegarty.
