Independent councillor proposes ‘the year of the footpath’

Mayo people could enjoy “the year of the footpath” if independent south Mayo Councillor Harry Walsh is re-elected to Mayo County Council.

What Cllr Walsh envisages is that Mayo County Council will set aside enough money in one budget year to finish off all footpaths in towns and villages across the county.

He said this was more important than developing dedicated walks by ensuring that people could enjoy safe walks.

The independent representative said cuts needed to be made at the bottom and suggested that the appointment of officers to “daft jobs” like walking development officers, was a cut that could be made by the local authority.

He added that fixing potholes should be more of a priority than developing dedicated walking routes, but retiring outdoor workers were not being replaced while new officer roles were being created.
