A 34-year-old South African man who was arrested on the suspicion of drink driving after he was observed driving carelessly — whereby he pulled his car out in front of a garda car — and later refused to provide a sample, was disqualified from driving for four years at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.

Judge Mary Devins adjourned sentencing in the case of a man who broke into his ex-partner’s house and assaulted her then partner in his bedroom. Patrick Farragher, 43 Barr na hAille, Claremorris, pleaded guilty to the charge in court which was also told he has since the incident been reunited with the woman, who was his ex-partner at the time.

Andrew Moran from Newport has been announced as a finalist of the HB Let’s Sail competition, as part of the Volvo Ocean Race Galway Stopover 2009. Primary and Secondary school students entered the competition to design and build a boat, made using HB ice-cream sticks. As a finalist Andrew will meet with Ian Walker from the Green Dragon team at the Volvo Ocean Race on Sunday May 24. The overall winner, announced on the day, will receive a family trip to the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in Stockholm.

A Lithuanian man was bound to the peace for a year after pleading guilty to a public order offence in Claremorris District Court this week. Mindaugas Ivoska, 59 Elm Park, Claremorris was arrested by gardaí on October 20 2008 at 12.40am after they were called to a domestic disturbance at his home.
