Newport boy shortlisted for HB Let’s Sail final

Andrew Moran from Newport has been announced as a finalist of the HB Let’s Sail competition, as part of the Volvo Ocean Race Galway Stopover 2009. Primary and Secondary school students entered the competition to design and build a boat, made using HB ice-cream sticks. As a finalist Andrew will meet with Ian Walker from the Green Dragon team at the Volvo Ocean Race on Sunday May 24. The overall winner, announced on the day, will receive a family trip to the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in Stockholm.

The entries judged to be the most creative, with the entrant’s age taken into account, will be displayed in the Race Village during the Volvo Ocean Race's stopover in Galway. Judging will take place on Sunday from 11am, with the winner being announced at 4pm.

All entrants into the competition received a HB Let’s Sail starter kit containing over 300 ice-cream sticks and tips on how to build their boat by top boat builder and Green Dragon crew manager Johnny Smullen who advised: “It is important that the hull is strong and stable and it should be pointed at the front so it can glide through the water. The mast should be high enough to support a large sail and strong enough to hold the boom.”
